Lockout/Tagout – Hazardous Energy Control

OSHA created the Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) standard to cover the servicing and maintenance of machines and equipment that could potentially cause injury to employees.  Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) refers to specific practices and procedures to safeguard employees from unexpected energization or start-up of machinery and equipment, or the release of hazardous energy during service of maintenance activities.

This course is designed to meet all of the OSHA requirements for Lockout/Tagout training per OHSA 29 CFR 1910.147.  Attendees will learn terminology, how to prepare for the Lockout process, how to safely release energy, proper locking and tagging procedures, proper testing and restart of equipment.  The following topics will be covered:

  • Overview – Lockout/Tagout
  • Energy Control Plan
  • Active vs. stored energy
  • Lockout Devices and Tagout Devices
  • Authorized personnel and energy isolation devices
  • Energy dissipation
  • Installing Lockout/Tagout devices during shift changes
  • Basic release procedures
  • Locking out electrical systems
